Driving your car hire in Muscat
Traffic in Muscat can be heavy a lot of the time, but generally the city is pretty easy to get around. Streets are well signposted and cared for.
Driving to Muscat from the airport
It’s an easy 14km drive from the airport to the heart of Muscat. Head out onto Sultan Qaboos St/Route 1 and follow it until you get to the centre of town. The trip should take around 13 minutes.
Taxis are available outside the terminal, and the public bus service is just a short walk away, should you wish to pick up your rental car from the city.
Tips for driving a car hire in Muscat
• Motorists in Oman drive on the right side of the road, and overtake on the left only.
• The speed limit in Muscat is 40km/h in urban areas, and 120km/h on the highways.
• The permitted blood alcohol level is 0%; do not drink and drive.
• Always carry your driver’s license.
• If a car flashes their lights at you, it often means that they are asking you to let them pass by.
Where to park your rental car in Muscat
At Muscat Airport, short-term parking begins at Bz0.500 for one hour, and another Bz0.500 per half hour thereafter. For long term parking, the first day costs O.R3, with subsequent days and additional O.R1 is added. After day five, O.R7 is to be payed daily.
On-street parking is pretty easy to find in Muscat; some with meters, some without. Hotels, shopping malls and museums often have free parking, just be aware that parking in certain areas is prohibited. When in doubt, see what other cars have done and follow suit.
