After wandering over bridge after bridge, head back to your rental car to explore more of northeastern Italy.
Exploring more of this romantic country? Head to the mountains for a winter ski trip or cruise along the Adriatic Sea and over to Rome, Italy’s capital city.

Driving from the airport to Venice
Venice has no roads so you must park your car hire on the mainland or at a garage on the edge of Venice. Exit the airport and follow signs for SS14. Merge onto Orlanda/SS14, then keep left to merge onto Strada Regionale 11 Padana Superiore, bringing you across the channel onto the island. Follow signs to the parking garage on Ponte della Liberta.
Driving tips for your Venice rental car
Canals and boats replace roads and cars in downtown Venice, but driving on the mainland is allowed. Read on for more Italian driving tips:
• Drive cautiously and defensively as Italian drivers are known for ignoring the rules of the road.
• Speed limits are as follows: 130 km/h on highways, 90 km/h on local roads and 50 km/h in urban areas.
• Stick to the speed limit, wear your seatbelt and park legally to avoid speed trap cameras and fines.
• Carry change for the toll roads.
• Always carry a good, paper road map in case your GPS fails.

Parking options at Venice Marco Polo Airport and Venice
Choose from short-term, Speedy Park, long stay uncovered and covered lots at Venice Marco Polo Airport. Enjoy 10 minutes free in short-term or Speedy Park or pay €6.50 for the first hour at short-term and €10 for the first two hours in Speedy Park. Long stay uncovered is the cheapest option at €10.5 per day and all lots are within walking distance to the terminal.
Because Venice is made up of canals, there are only a few parking garages next to the historical city that charge around €25 for the day. Otherwise find parking in Mestre on the mainland and travel via train into Venice or park at the airport and take the water bus.
After strolling through the Venice waterways, hop in your rental car for a cross-country road trip and make sure to read our insider tips on driving through foreign countries.
