Driving from the airport to downtown Rome
Drive the 25 kilometres from Fiumicino Airport to Rome in 40 to 60 minutes depending on traffic conditions. For the fastest route, merge onto A91 from the airport heading to Rome. Then exit towards Colombo Centro, merging onto Cristoforo Colombo, which turns into Largo Terme di Caracalla. This will bring you into the metropolitan area of Rome.
Driving tips for your Rome rental car

● Drive on the right side of the road, overtake on the left side.
● Italians are aggressive drivers. Follow national road rules and allow them to pass.
● Driving in the center of Rome is off limits except to residents or vehicles with special permits. If the sign says “Varco Attivo,” do not continue. “Varco non Attivo” means you are allowed to drive in the center.
Choose from short-term parking or multi-level garage parking for immediate access to the terminal at Fiumicino Airport. Long-term parking is the cheapest option and includes a free shuttle ride to the airport. Valet parking is also available in front of the domestic terminal.
If you are planning to drive near the center of Rome, it is best to use parking garages in the surrounding suburbs for cheaper rates and easier accessibility. On-street parking is available along blue lines with an hourly rate around €1.50 and, depending on the location, free on weekends. Be sure to abide by signs and if you aren’t sure, ask a local.
