There are few places in the world that inspire such a wistful love of a city like Rome. It’s Italy’s capital city and a wonderland of romance, history, culture, food, and architecture. It’s where you’ll look back into an ancient world at the Colosseum, admire intricate masterpieces at the Sistine Chapel, and feast on mouth-watering pizzas, pastas, and gelatos - and that’s just the beginning. See the city’s top attractions and countless lesser-known sights when you rent a car at Rome Ciampino Airport.
It’s also a good idea to make the time to see more of Italy with your car hire. Driving north to Florence only takes a few hours, and it’s not far from there to the country’s famous ‘Chocolate Trail’. Or, head up the coastline to take the SP51, dubbed one of Europe’s most scenic drives. For those who love history, head south to Naples and Pompeii to explore these spectacular locations.
Take the hard work out of finding the best deal on car hire at Rome Airport by comparing brands and vehicles in one place. A search with Airport Rentals will generate an up-to-date list of available vehicles from leading hire companies at the airport, so you only need to look in one place to find that perfect car rental.
Simply enter your travel dates and hit ‘search cars’ to see what’s available. The cheapest car hire at Rome Airport are automatically listed at the top, and you have the option of filtering your results to narrow down your search by car type and size.
Airport Rentals ensures immediate and secure booking, and online reservation management. We also offer 24/7 assistance if you have any questions about your car hire in Rome.
Rome Ciampino Airport is officially called Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport (CIA), and is the secondary airport for the city, after the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. It is largely used for charters and budget airlines, and serves almost 6 million passengers per year. Popular destinations from the airport include Athens, Bordeaux, Dublin, and Madrid.
Within the terminal, you’ll find shops, bars, restaurants, business facilities, duty-free, and free WiFi. All the car rental companies have offices in the arrivals hall, so you can pick up your vehicle as soon as you land.
Driving from Rome Ciampino Airport to the CBD
The airport is 15 kilometres southeast of the city centre, although the drive can be slow, so expect to spend an hour covering this distance. When you leave the terminal, simply turn right onto the SS7 - Via Appia Nuova - and follow it all the way into the city.
Tips for driving in Rome
Rome is notorious for its traffic and tiny streets, but don’t let that put you off exploring this beautiful city with your own set of wheels. Simply prepare for the trip and read our tips before you arrive:
● You will drive on the right-hand side of the road in Italy.
● Note that most of Rome’s city centre is ZTL, which means it is a traffic controlled area and non-residents are not permitted to drive there. Instead, park your car hire and take public transport or walk through these central areas.
● Rent a GPS unit with your car.
● Hire a small car (unless you need the space) to make it easier to navigate Rome’s narrow streets.
● Speed cameras are common in Italy so don’t be tempted to exceed the limit.
● Leave earlier than required to account for traffic and be patient.
There are roughly 2,000 spaces available at Rome Ciampino Airport. The first 15 minutes are free, and the first full hour is €1.25. Automatic pay points accept cash, and the machines at the exits accept credit cards.
Just as you cannot drive in the city centre by the historic landmarks, you cannot park in these areas either. You can park outside the ZTL in on-street paid stalls, which operate on weekdays for €1.50/hour. You can also use the ‘Park and Ride’ parking lots, which are available near metro stations outside of the central city. Here, parking is just €2 for 12 hours.
