Palermo on the island of Sicily has a long history spanning many empires. The patchwork of cultures that have made their mark on the city has formed something quite spectacular: a place that is a crossroads of ancient and modern, east and west, Phoenician, Greek, Arab, Norman and of course Italian. In Palermo, you can see diverse architecture, taste a variety of flavours and just relax by the Mediterranean to enjoy the vibe of such an ancient, significant place.
Pick up a car hire from Palermo Airport, and the isle of Sicily awaits. You could head across to Catania via Caltanissetta, skirt around the coast to Trapani or get on a car ferry and head to the mainland at Messina. Whether you’re in Italy for a short time or are planning to sail across the strait and embark on a full cross-country road trip, Palermo is a fantastic place to start.

Also called Falcone–Borsellino Airport, the air facility at Palermo is one of the busiest in southern Italy. From the four-storied terminal, it offers both international and domestic flights to a range of destinations around Europe, many of which are seasonal. Restaurants, bars, a few shops, a bank, an information desk and free WiFi in the departures lounge make it a comfortable place for travellers to arrive in or depart Palermo.
You will find counters for the on-airport hire suppliers in the Arrivals Hall.
Getting from the Airport to Palermo
It’s quite a distance from Palermo Airport to the city itself, of more than 30 kilometres. However, it’s also a reasonably straightforward trip with some great sea views! Depart the airport on the Palermo-Aeroporto Punta Raisi, and merge onto the E90 headed towards Palermo. After you enter the outskirts of the city, take the Via Belgio exit then quickly turn right onto Vie del Nebrodi and left onto Via A. De Gasperi. This will take you to an intersection with the Via Sampolo, where you can turn right and head into central Palermo.
Driving tips for your Palermo rental car
● Italy has some incredibly scenic drives. Always pull over to admire the view rather than take your attention away from the road, particularly on steep and winding routes!
● Right turns at red lights are always illegal.
● Italians like to drive fast. Be aware of this, and drive defensively.
● If you see a sign saying “Zona Traffico Limitato” or “ZTL”, this is a limited traffic zone and you should not enter.
● Italy has an extensive system of toll roads. Some rental cars may come equipped with a Telepass which allows electronic toll collection.
P2 at Palermo Airport is the primary short-term parking lot, a two-level building which will cost you €3 per hour or €18 for the first day and €9 for each subsequent day. P3 is a long-stay lot with similar hourly rates capped at €13 for the first day and €75 for a week.
In the city centre, blue lines indicate on-street parking which costs €1 per hour. White lines indicate free on-street parking. If you can’t find a spot on the street, head to one of the parking buildings around the city - these have plentiful spaces and generally cost between €1 and €2 per hour.
