Driving tips for your Budapest rental car
Hungary has a zero-alcohol-tolerance policy so if you plan to drink, make alternative arrangements for transportation.
● Drive on the right side of the road, overtake on the left.
● Triangular red-and-white yield signs at intersections mean you do not have to stop unless there is an approaching car, in which case priority is given to the oncoming vehicle. Otherwise, proceed through the junction with caution.
● A vignette, purchasable at your car hire office or gas station, is required if you plan to use the motorway network which is mostly comprised of toll roads.
● Follow the posted speed limits and ensure you and anyone traveling with you is wearing a seatbelt at all times.
Parking in Budapest and at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport
Parking at Budapest Airport is efficient, with six lots in close proximity to the airport terminals. The three Holiday Parking lots are for long stays and offer affordable rates, while the other three lots are for quick stops and shorter stays.
Street parking is permitted and you will find paid parking lots conveniently located throughout Budapest. A nice feature for motorists is the free parking found at many of the tourist hot spots in the city. A blue circular sign with a red “X” through it indicates a ‘no parking zone’. Follow parking times closely to avoid fines and wheel clamps on your hired car.
Once you’ve explored Budapest in its entirety, make your way to neighbouring countries like Italy, Austria, or the Czech Republic.
