Renting a car in France will give you the chance to see this amazing country on your own terms. You might choose to cruise along the French Riviera seeking the sun, follow the Rhône for a gourmand’s journey of fine food and wine or meander through the countryside of southern France. It’s really just a matter of deciding which parts of France appeal most and setting a course for leisure and exploration.
Having flown into France, the next logical step is to pick up some wheels so you can set out on your adventure as soon as possible. There are many different facets to France, so the city you fly into will have a lot to do with how your holiday starts at least. The good thing is, no matter which corner of the country you’re headed for, it’s easy to find a cheap car rental within easy travel distance of that part of France.
● Nice airport car rental - Nicknamed Nice la Belle (Nice the Beautiful), this gorgeous getaway on the Mediterranean attracts 4 million visitors every year. It serves as the perfect introduction to the French Riviera and is practically next door to Monaco, another top destination in the region.
● Paris airport car rental - This legendary city has entered popular culture as the City of Love, and when you visit it’s easy to see why. Leafy avenues, cosy alleys and exquisite architecture all conspire to steal your heart. Then there’s all the rich history to discover, the food to savour, the culture to soak in...
● Marseille car rental - This is the second largest city in France, and while it may not be the darling of the Riviera, it does have its own distinctive culture, quite unique from the rest of France. In fact, Marseille is something of a regional hub for entertainment and culture, boasting numerous museums, art galleries, cinemas and an important opera house.
● Bordeaux airport car rental - Now this is a truly special city. Half of Bordeaux is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its high number of preserved historic buildings, but even the newer sections of the city are beautifully designed. A car rental in Bordeaux will also allow you to explore one of the finest wine regions in the world - not an opportunity to be missed.
● Lyon airport car rental - Ready your tastebuds: Lyon is the haute cuisine capital of the world, so there’s no better place to go for a discerning foodie. Even if you’re not much for fancy food, Lyon’s restaurants cater to pretty much anyone who just loves tasty dishes.
● Beauvais airport car rental - The north of France is often neglected when it comes to travel plans, but it really shouldn’t be. Beauvais is a gateway to the north, where travellers can discover some of the country’s finest cathedrals, medieval castles and some of the most important battlefields in European history, like Agincourt, Crécy and the Somme.
● Toulouse airport car rental - Sitting roughly halfway between Bordeaux and Marseille, Toulouse lies at the heart of France’s southwest. Featuring an old town characterised by red brick shops and churches, this is very much a university city with a lively culture that includes tea rooms, bustling food markets and a stellar (and varied) music scene.
There are plenty of different brands offering cheap car hire in France, so with a quick search it’s easy to rent the perfect car for your France road trip. The wide selection of rental suppliers gives you the chance to pick from household name brands like Hertz and Thrifty or search out excellent deals from smaller brands like Autoclick and Keddy.
If you’re visiting from across the channel or from Down Under, the biggest adjustment with hitting the road in France will be driving on the right hand side of the road. It’s not as tricky as it sounds though - just be careful around intersections and you should be fine. The speed limit in urban areas is generally 50 km/h, but this can drop down to 30 km/h in some inner city areas - there will be signs to let you know. Outside of cities, limits vary a little according to weather conditions. In dry weather, the default speed limits are 90 km/h on rural 2-3 lane roads, 110 km/h on 4 lane expressways and 130 km/h on highways. When it’s raining, this changes to 80, 100 and 110 km/h respectively. When it comes to drink driving, don’t even risk it. The French are vigilant about their roadside checks, and the legal blood alcohol content is 0.05% which may put you over the limit after just one drink. One more thing to note is that unlike some other countries, there is no free right turn when a traffic light is red.
● It might be tempting to play fast and loose with the speed limits, especially when you’re barrelling along expressways or highways, but speed radars are very common in France and you’re quite likely to get caught out. They also have a tendency to be deviously placed, for example just before the limit changes from urban to rural. As a rule of thumb, don’t change your speed until you’ve actually driven by the speed limit sign.
● Manual transmission vehicles are pretty much standard in France, so if you need/prefer an automatic transmission, make sure to specify that when you’re booking your France car hire. You can filter by transmission type on AirportRentals.com, which makes this step super simple.
● On roads with multiple lanes, the left hand lane is just for passing. Pass if you need to, then head back toward the right, no matter how fast you’re travelling.
● Try to get hold of a France airport car rental that comes with a GPS system. While a standard map will do for long haul road trips, navigating cities (almost all of which were built before the advent of cars) can be a real headache without GPS navigation thanks to narrow streets, irregular road layouts and hard-to-see street signs.
Aside from France, Airport Rentals leads in car rentals from Italy, from Spain, from every country in Europe, and around the globe.
