Gaspe is a small city at the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula, an area also known as Gaspesie. This region offers a whole different side of the province of Quebec, with wild coastlines, lush national parks and countless lighthouses dotted along the shoreline. The city of Gaspe is also historically significant for Canada, as it’s where Jacques Cartier landed and claimed ‘New France’ in the 16th century. Much of the attractions here are centred around the coastline, from the bays and beaches to its scenic waterfront vistas. That said, the region is best explored by car as it is quite spread out, so picking up a Gaspe Airport car rental upon arrival will help you to see as much of it as possible.
Naturally, this area is ripe for road trips. Follow the coastline for 4.5 hours to enjoy incredible views along the St Lawrence River as you drive towards Mont Joli. Or, you can follow the coastline in the opposite direction to drive a little over 5 hours down to Bathurst, another small city with views of the coast, over the border in New Brunswick.
