Coined by James Cook himself, the Bay of Plenty is no less plentiful today than it was in 1769. Swarming with orchards, Tauranga brings some of the best citrus, kiwifruit and avocados that New Zealand has to offer.

Couple this with the prominent port bringing a fresh selection of seafood to local restaurants and cafes. Discover local craft beer and the friendly neighbourhood bars and you’ll be sure to enjoy any dining experience in the Bay of Plenty.

A short drive from Tauranga is Mount Maunganui, best known for its popular surf beaches and scenic mountain walk. Feeling adventurous? Try skydiving or blokarting for an adrenaline-filled experience!

Tauranga

Tauranga one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country - Travel Tips

Surrounded by a stunning coastline is Tauranga, one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country and the largest city in the Bay of Plenty. Head to The Strand, a popular waterfront area packed with cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

For a water adventure, try sailing, diving, fishing or even the local dolphin tours.

Looking for a trek? Try the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park or McLaren Falls - you won’t regret it.

Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui is just a 10 minute drive from Tauranga

Only a 10 minute drive from Tauranga, you’ll find this paradise for surfers and sunbathers alike. Grab some comfortable shoes and take to the walking track of the iconic mountain, Mauao, which sits 232m above sea level. With incredible 360 degree views across the Bay of Plenty, you’ll be glad you brought your camera.

For those a bit averse to vertical climbs, the white sand beaches are the perfect place to unwind - go for a swim in the waves or try Pilot Bay for some calmer waters.

Katikati

Tour around Katikati the Mural Town

If you’re in the area, take a detour through Katikati. Self-titled as the ‘mural town’, various murals, sculptures and carvings line the streets, recognising the early Maori and original settlers.

For those who enjoy poetry, Katikati also claims to have a substantial Haiku collection, the largest outside of Japan.

Got your camera? Take a short drive to Minden Lookout for unobstructed views from the coastline across to the rolling hills and local farmland.

Waihi

Waihi is home to the richest gold mine in New Zealand.

The treasure chest of the Bay of Plenty, Waihi is home to the richest gold mine in New Zealand. Still in operation today, there’s hands-on experiences for the entire family.

Bring your bike and try the Hauraki Rail Trail or the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway for a local scenic experience. If you’re looking for the water, take a short trip to the beautiful Waihi Beach, grab a bite to eat and relax in the sun.
