There aren't many countries better for road trips than Australia. This is the place where you can experience any and every landscape you could imagine. From vast red desert and otherworldly natural structures to white sand beaches with sapphire waters to lush dense green foliage, rainforests, bustling cityscapes and mountains, it's all right here just waiting for you to explore. Here are some great ideas if you've got three days free for a road trip. Two nights away is enough to see some pretty interesting things in our beautiful country.

Adelaide to Innes National Park

Person standing on a rock looking over the national park.

It's only 3.5 hours from Adelaide to Innes National Park but if you're a nature lover you're going to want to drag this one out over a few days. Sand dunes, turquoise lagoons and generally incredible views characterise this road trip. Swim in crystal clear waters, visit a shipwreck, explore one of the lighthouses. A bit of action, a bit of leisure and a lot of fun - this is South Australia at its stunning best.

The Grand Pacific Drive

A person walking along the beach.

The Grand Pacific Drive begins just south of Sydney in the Royal National Park and hugs the coast all the way down to the Shoalhaven region. Kiama is a great stop for its famous blowhole (and the possibility of spotting whales if you're there at the right time of year) and the White Sands Walk at Jervis Bay is also stunning - and very accurately named. Explore Bawley Point, visit the 'roos at Pebbly Beach and if time allows, even extend your trip to take in the capital. Canberra has a lot to offer with a fascinating arts and diverse dining scene.

Cairns to Airlie Beach

Two people wading in the ocean.

This road trip has it all - the famous Great Barrier reef, rainforest clad mountains, beautiful coastal views,  Hinchinbrook Island and its hikes, and the swimming holes and waterfalls of Wooroonooran National Park and so much more. It would take over seven hours to do it straight, but with stops to explore Girringun National park and Townsville you can break it up quite nicely with a few overnighters. This is a road trip to remember.

Hopefully this gives you some inspiration to book your three day journey through any of the stunning parts of our country. A road trip is a wonderful way to explore Australia. As they say ‘ it’s not just about the destination, it’s all in the journey’ and this applies so accurately to travelling within our borders.
