How is it almost Christmas? Those summer barbecues and long lazy days-off are just around the corner! What will you be doing? Beaching it at a bach? Visiting family in other parts of the country? December and January are the perfect time to do that road trip you’ve been thinking about forever, but with more of the population out seeing the sights than ever before, it would pay to lock in that rental car booking and accommodation now. Here are some destination ideas to get you thinking.
Fly into Hamilton and see what the mighty Waikato has to offer for a road trip. Geological wonders at Waitomo (don’t miss the amazing falls at Marokopa); beach life at its best in Raglan; Hobbity fun in Matamata - it’s enchanting even if you’re not a Lord of the Rings geek, and the world class gardens in Hamilton itself. The Gardens are really worth seeing, whether you’re into plants and flowers or not; the new surrealist section will appeal to anyone of any age or interest.
Fly into Hawke’s Bay Airport, rent a car and drive around this beautiful part of New Zealand. Stock up at the Farmers Markets, cycle the vineyards, climb Te Mata Peak, see the gannets at Cape Kidnappers (depending on the time of year). Walk the pebbly beaches, take an art deco tour of Napier or just kick back and enjoy the easy breezy Bay lifestyle.
Fly into Queenstown and enjoy your summer break between the tourist capital itself and charming little sisters - Wanaka and Arrowtown. Hike, eat, get out on the lake, sample local beer and wine, pan for gold, shop or get your adrenaline fix by skydiving, jet boating, bungy jumping - or even climbing a waterfall (if you’re feeling energetic). There has never been a better time to see this part of the country. Take the chance while we have it.
So, get planning and get booking. The weather looks set to be amazing, we all deserve a break in the sun and there are so many places filled with exciting activities right in our own backyard! These are just three suggestions of so many - whether you’re looking for art and culture, long days of doing nothing, or adrenaline and adventure, there’s a pocket of New Zealand with your name all over it - probably several.
